EAA Chapter 87
Minutes of meeting dated March 9, 2010
Submitted by Richard DeVito -
Secretary
The March meeting was held at The
Old Bowdoin School.
President Charlie Gabelmann called the Meeting to
order at 1925 with a quorum of Board Members in
attendance.
1.
SECRETARY’S REPORT
Dick Wood made a motion to accept
the Secretary’s report for February as submitted on
the chapter web site.
It was seconded by Tom Muller and passed
unanimously.
2.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Tom Muller read the Treasurer’s
report, listing the Chapter bank balance on 2/28/10 at
$5,448.59 with membership at 32 paid, 3 waived, and 8
open. Russell
Keith made a motion to accept the report as presented.
It was seconded by Leo Leclair, and passed
unanimously.
3.
APRIL MEETING
Charlie Gabelmann reported that
Dave Peppel from the FAA would discuss experimental
aircraft certification with our members at the April
meeting.
4.
YOUNG EAGLES
Everett Perkins reported that he
needs about 2 months lead time, and the chapter needs to
decide when and where we plan to host Young Eagle events
this year. Some
members want to have a day at Lewiston Auburn, and
Oceans Point at Wiscasset may want one on Oct 2nd
in conjunction with a 50 year KIWI anniversary event.
With Young Eagles day planned on the second
Saturday of June, we must have a decision soon, and
begin advertising.
More discussions are planned for the April
meeting.
4.
BORE SCOPES
Leo Leclair reported on the results
of an investigation on Bore scopes for the chapter.
There is a wide variety available with prices
ranging from $100 to several thousand dollars.
The cheapest offers viewing capability through an
eyepiece only, while the most expensive have digital
recording and viewing capability.
Leo stated that a unit with an articulated head
is very desirable.
The tool would be useful to the chapter not only
to inspect engines, but also as an aircraft inspection
tool. The
chapter needs to define the mission for the tool to
determine what unit would best fit our needs.
This topic will be discussed again at a later
meeting.
5.
ACE CAMP
Tom Muller made a motion that the
chapter provides a full Ace Camp scholarship for the
2010 program. This
was seconded by DJ Merrill and passed unanimously.
6.
GENERAL
Steve Williams will conduct a FAA
Safety seminar at Wiscasset on Saturday March 20
starting at 1000. The popular annual chili cook off will follow the seminar.
EAA has courses available on the
web on weight and balance, welding, and the Sonex
aircraft.
DJ Merrill is putting together an
e-mail list for Maine Aviation interests.
This will be similar to the current EAA87 list
and will allow anyone on the list to post or comment.
Those currently on the EAA87 list have been added to the
new Maine Aviation list as well.
DJ passed out copies of a flyer on the program
and asked members to post them where possible.
Everett Perkins reported that he
has completed a course for Light Sport repairman and is
now able to sign off on inspections and repairs for
light sport aircraft.
7.
ADJOURNMENT
Jerry Crute made a motion to
adjourn the meeting and Gary Bergendoff seconded this.
The motion passed unanimously, and the meeting
was adjourned at 2040
6.
PROGRAM
Everett Perkins demonstrated repair
procedures for light sport wooden and composite
propellers. Everett
damaged a wooden prop by filing a small notch on the
prop edge. Tape
was applied around the damages area to create a small
dam. Liquid
super glues was then placed in the notch, and that was
sprinkled with Baking Soda as a filler. After
the glue had hardened, Everett sanded the glued area
until he had a smooth surface.
The composite prop was similarly damaged; taped,
and 5 Minute JB Weld applied.
After the JB Weld had set, Everett sanded the pop
surface until smooth.
